("beloved dog" in Hindi) was founded on a belief best stated by Mahatma Gandhi:
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated".
The stray dogs of Dharamsala, India need your help. Please donate your dog’s old collars and tags!!
Most dogs in Dharamasala are stray and abandoned. Their hard lives typically leave them injured and infected with disease. Unfortunately, throughout the entire state of Himachal Pradesh there are no veterinarian services. In July 2006, a mass killing was issued by the town of Mcleod Ganj (Upper Dharamsala and home to the Dalai Lama) of stray dogs in the area, by poisoning!!! Seeing this cruel treatment of animals motivated a man named Arvind Sharma to dedicate his life to improving the care and treatment of the dogs in the region.
I recently spent 3 weeks in Dharamsala volunteering at a local preschool. Every day, as I walked to my classroom, I passed an injured dog who had been left to die. I was astounded that no one who lived nearby seemed to care. It broke my heart. As fate would have it, I met Arvind. As soon as I told him about the dog, he sent one of his volunteer vets, who he had recruited, to help. Miraculously, the action that I took and the concern I showed, allowed those who had been
ignoring the dog on a daily basis to begin showing concern for the poor dog. I am happy to say that the dog, Tommy, is alive and well and being looked after by the people who live in the neighborhood and receiving follow up care by Arvind!!
Arvind and his organization have put initiatives in place to control over population of stray dogs and to improve their overall health by sterilization, vaccination, adoption, and shelter and rescue for sick and injured animals. At this time, he has no way of identifying which dogs have been vaccinated nor is there have the money to implement such a program. The identification of these dogs will allow for proper tracking and will help to improve the strays treatment in society.

Many of you have heard of the devastating floods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the home of one of our own, certified Anusara Yoga teacher, Marsha Nieland. Located in downtown Cedar Rapids, Fusion Studio is in the heart of the area of the city that was hit the worst. Marsha, along with Anusara-Inspired Yoga teachers Bev Nowak and Brenda Hack, and the students of Fusion Studio are some of the warmest, open-hearted yogins I’ve ever met. Some of them lost their homes, and Marsha wants to start classes soon, so they’ll have a place to nourish their bodies and spirits as they begin the hard work of rebuilding their lives.
In the spirit of serving her
beloved community, Marsha has
expressed a need for yoga props
to start providing yoga to the
community immediately.
“Any little bit will be so appreciated. I didn't have flood insurance, so nothing will be covered. Several of my students’ homes are completely gone. I feel so badly for them - if I have any leftover donations from the Yoga community, it will go to help them.”
Any funds can be sent in a check made out to
Fusion Studio, 419 Green Valley Terrace SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 52403.

After a hearfelt weekend with Seane Corn the Öm Time Community has taken on a challenge to raise funds to support the Cambodian Children's Fund through Seane's foundation, Off the Mat Into the World - www.offthematintotheworld.org.
Cambodia Challenge 2008
Become a leader while saving lives.
Are you ready to make a commitment to truly making a difference in the world and becoming a leader?
Join Seane and Suzanne on an inner and outer journey. We will travel to one of the poorest areas of the world, the garbage dumps of Cambodia where small children fend for their families by picking through the trash.
The Leadership Challenge
We are taking a small group of leaders and setting a significant fundraising goal for each person who comes on the trip. Through the funds we raise, we will be able to leave Cambodia knowing we have saved many lives. This fundraising effort helps us to know that you are a leader who has the ability to find support and manifest a dream. You have all of 2008, until December 31st to achieve this goal, and we will provide training materials and phone support.
Cambodian Children's Fund
Using education, training, healthcare and community work to break generational cycles of poverty and abuse.
Founded in 2003 by Scott Neeson, The Cambodian Children's Fund is dedicated to helping Cambodia's poorest, most undereducated and most vulnerable children.
This program offers protection, comprehensive healthcare, education and vocational training to over 260 children of whom 150 are full-time residents in our facilities. The majority of our children come from Steung Meanchey, Phnom Penh's notorious garbage dump, where they work picking through garbage for recyclable items to sell. With no schooling, no healthcare and no access to basic public services, these children live in appalling living conditions and have little hope of escaping a life of destitution.
For more information on CCF visit their website, www.cambodianchildrensfund.org
OUR GOAL
To band together as a community to raise $100,000 for the Cambodian Children's Fund. By achieving this goal we will be able to send 5 leaders from our local comunity to Cambodia to work directly with the children.
Please stay tuned to the Om Times and check back with this page frequently for ways that you can help and be involved in this project.
To donate, volunteer or offer suggestions email Amber here. We would love to hear from you!
